Moving a Mattress in Manhattan Without a U-Haul: Inside a $165 Bed Delivery

The customer needed a bed frame and mattress picked up in Midtown and delivered to the West Village.

The destination was a sixth-floor apartment with no elevator.

Our records show the job was completed, with a $165 customer total. But the conversation reveals details that a price alone leaves out.

The customer expected another person to help. The mover hadn’t understood that a second helper was needed. Whether the frame was already disassembled still needed clarification. At arrival, an East/West address mix-up caused confusion.

If you’re moving a mattress in Manhattan without renting a U-Haul, these are the details to settle before pickup.

What the $165 job included

The request listed a full bed with a headboard and one mattress.

This was a combined bed-and-mattress move requested in September 2026. $165 is one recorded customer total, not a standard mattress-delivery rate.

The record also doesn’t break out a separate charge for stairs or establish exactly what assembly work was performed.

What it gives us is a concrete example of a customer arranging transportation and carrying help for a difficult destination.

Confirm who will carry the mattress

During the conversation, the customer asked whether the mover was bringing another person.

The mover replied that they hadn’t realized a second person was needed and couldn’t arrange one for that day. The customer then offered to help carry the bed.

The messages don’t establish who ultimately did the carrying. They do show that the helper arrangement was still being discussed close to pickup.

Before accepting an offer, ask:

“How many movers does this price include, and will you need me to help carry anything?”

Give the mover the mattress dimensions, construction, and access details so they can assess the work.

If you need the mattress carried from the seller’s bedroom into your apartment, say that. An offer for transportation needs to cover the lifting you expect, too.

Describe the stairs at both addresses

“Sixth floor, no elevator” is useful information. “Apartment delivery” leaves too much unanswered.

For pickup and delivery, provide:

• The floor number
• Whether an elevator is available
• Whether the mattress fits in that elevator
• Any narrow stair turns or landings
• Where the mover should collect and leave the mattress

Photos of a tight landing or stairwell can help explain something that’s difficult to describe.

The completed Manhattan job requested carrying to the sixth floor. That does not tell us the price per flight of stairs. It tells us why the destination needs to be part of the agreed job description.

A mattress and a bed frame are different moving tasks

The mover also asked whether the bed frame was already disassembled.

The customer initially didn’t know. Later, they explained that the headboard and bed were separated.

If you’re buying a bed from someone else, check its condition before booking transportation:

A seller saying “the bed comes apart” doesn’t establish that it will be taken apart before the mover arrives.

Ask who will do that work and whether it is included in the price.

Check East and West before the mover leaves

The conversation included an arrival mix-up between the East and West versions of the address.

That’s a small typing error with a practical consequence: the mover can reach the wrong place while someone waits for the delivery.

Before pickup, send one clear message containing:

Pickup: Full address, East or West where applicable, apartment, floor, entry instructions, and contact.

Delivery: The same details, plus where the mattress needs to end up.

Have the seller confirm the pickup address if you’re collecting a purchase. Make sure the address entered in the booking matches the one shared in the conversation.

Choose a vehicle around the mattress you have

You can arrange the move with someone who provides transportation rather than collecting and returning a rental yourself.

Give that person the mattress’s actual measurements before they choose a vehicle. Include its thickness and explain whether a bed frame, headboard, or box spring is also coming.

Ask them to confirm that their vehicle can accommodate the load in the condition it will be transported.

A mattress still sealed in its original box is a different load from the same mattress after it has expanded. Don’t plan around the size of the box it originally arrived in.

Check before folding or compressing it

A mattress bag can protect the surface during handling. It doesn’t establish that the mattress can be folded, rolled, or compressed.

Follow the instructions for your specific brand and model. Casper, for example, advises against folding or rolling its mattresses after unboxing.

Tell the mover if your mattress needs to remain unfolded. That affects the vehicle and the route through the building.

Ask for the price of the complete delivery

In the Manhattan example, the accepted mover offer was $150, while the recorded customer total was $165.

Use the customer total when budgeting.

Before booking, confirm that the price covers the work you’ve described:

• Collecting the mattress from its current location
• Loading and transportation
• Unloading and carrying to the agreed destination
• The agreed number of helpers
• Any bed-frame disassembly or reassembly
• Applicable platform fees

If you’re comparing that with a rental, include mileage, fuel, coverage, and any paid lifting help in your rental estimate.

Renting a vehicle still leaves you responsible for arranging how the mattress gets down the first building and up the next one.

A message you can send before booking

Use this as a starting point:

I need to move a [size and model] mattress from [pickup address] to [delivery address]. Its measurements are [dimensions]. Pickup is on floor [number] with [stairs or elevator]. Delivery is on floor [number] with [stairs or elevator].
I also have [frame, headboard, or box spring]. The frame will be [assembled or disassembled]. Please confirm the vehicle, number of movers, whether you need me to help carry, and the total price for delivery into the apartment.

Add your pickup window and photographs.

That gives the mover something specific to price and gives you something specific to compare.
