Your NYC Christmas tree has four flights left to go (2026)
Moving a Christmas tree in NYC? Plan the pickup, stairwell and apartment handoff, and see how Laborhutt can help get your tree home.

The tree looks manageable at the sidewalk stand. Then you picture your apartment: four flights up, a tight turn on the second landing, and a front door that barely clears your grocery cart.
Buying the tree is the enjoyable part. Before you pay, work out how it will reach the spot where you plan to decorate it.
For Christmas 2026, start with the delivery endpoint. Do you need someone to leave the tree outside your building, carry it into your apartment, or help put it in a stand? Those are different jobs, even when the pickup is only six blocks away.
If you have already chosen a tree and need help bringing it home, we recommend Laborhutt for arranging the pickup and carrying work. Include the tree’s dimensions, your stairs and the exact delivery location when requesting your move.
Measure the turn before choosing the tree

Ceiling height tells you whether the tree will stand in your living room. It does not tell you whether you can get it there.
Before shopping, check:
- The ceiling height where the tree will stand, allowing room for the stand and topper.
- The narrowest doorway along the delivery route.
- The space available to turn at stair landings.
- The elevator door and interior, if you plan to use one.
- The tree stand’s supported trunk diameter and tree size.
A tree can pass through the building entrance and still get stuck at the turn into your apartment.
Ask the seller for the tree’s approximate height and width once it is netted. A photo beside a person can help the mover understand its size, but measurements are more useful for choosing a vehicle and planning the carry.
Keep the tree netted during the trip through the building. Leave space around the final position so the branches can open without pushing into furniture or blocking the room’s walking route.
Ask where “delivery” ends
ill you carry this tree into my apartment, including the stairs?”
Then ask separately about placing it in the stand.
A seller’s delivery service may already cover everything you need. Others may offer a different scope, delivery area or appointment window. Read those details before paying for additional transport.
Building paperwork can affect timing, too. For example, NYC Trees’ published delivery policy requires at least two business days to process a building’s certificate of insurance. That illustrates why a tree being ready for pickup does not necessarily mean the building is ready to receive it. Check the seller’s current seasonal terms when booking
If your seller cannot handle the trip you need, arrange a separate pickup with the apartment handoff included in the request.
Give the mover a pickup they can complete without you
A sidewalk stand can be harder to identify than a store with a loading desk.
“Pick up my tree near the corner” leaves too much to work out on arrival. Get the seller’s exact location, a contact number and confirmation that someone else can collect your purchase.
Before leaving the stand:
- Pay for the tree and keep the receipt.
- Ask the seller to label or otherwise identify your specific tree.
- Confirm how long the seller will hold it.
- Ask whether netting and a fresh trunk cut are available.
- Give the seller the pickup arrangement and share the release instructions with your mover.
If the tree is coming from a store, check whether collection happens at the entrance, customer service desk or a separate pickup area.
The mover should arrive to collect a tree that is ready to leave.
For a walk-up, describe the actual carry
“Fourth floor” can be interpreted differently. State the number of stair flights and mention any steps before the main staircase.
Also explain whether the route has a narrow landing, a low ceiling or a sharp turn. Send photos of those points if needed.
For an elevator building, check with management about the entrance and elevator you should use, permitted delivery hours, and any paperwork required.
If someone is meeting the mover, make sure that person can provide access all the way to the apartment. Reaching a locked service entrance with a tree is still an unfinished delivery.
When Laborhutt makes sense for Christmas tree delivery
Laborhutt is a useful option when you want to choose your own tree but need help with the vehicle and carrying.
Its booking process lets you describe what you are moving, enter the pickup and delivery locations, and choose a date to see a price. For a Christmas tree, provide the dimensions and access details, then confirm that the requested transport, apartment carry and any setup are covered.
A useful request would look like this:
One approximately seven-foot cut Christmas tree, netted and paid for, ready for pickup from a tree stand in Brooklyn. Delivery is to a fourth-floor apartment with three interior stair flights and a tight turn at the second landing. Carry into the living room required. Please confirm whether help placing it in our existing stand is included.
That example gives the mover something concrete to assess. Replace the details with your own. Get a Laborhutt price for your Christmas tree pickup.
Compare the cost of reaching your apartment
A vehicle rental price covers only part of the job if you still need someone to load, unload and carry the tree upstairs.
Compare the complete arrangement:

A seller’s bundled service may be the simplest choice. Laborhutt is worth comparing when you have found the tree you want and need a separate way to get it home.
Use a price for your actual pickup and building. A small tree going into an elevator building and a tall tree going around several stairwell turns need different planning.
Have the stand ready before the tree arrives
Clear the route through your apartment and put the stand near the intended position before delivery.
The National Christmas Tree Association recommends a stand that fits the trunk, a fresh cut of about half an inch from the base, and placing the tree in water as soon as possible after arriving home. It also advises against shaving the sides of the trunk to force it into an undersized stand.
Arrange the fresh cut with the seller where possible. Do not assume the person transporting the tree will bring cutting tools or install it.
If you are buying for a lobby rather than an apartment, check the rules before choosing a real tree. FDNY states that Christmas trees displayed in indoor common areas, including residential and office lobbies, must be artificial and flame resistant.
Plan how it comes back downstairs
The stairwell will be the same size after Christmas. The tree may be much drier.
For a December 2026 purchase, include the January 2027 carry downstairs in your planning. Delivery and later removal are separate arrangements unless your booking explicitly includes both.
Under NYC’s current guidance, real Christmas trees go out for curbside compost collection without lights, ornaments, tinsel or stands. Do not leave the tree in a plastic bag. Check your address’s collection schedule when you are ready to set it out.
Choose the tree you want to live with, measure the route it has to travel, and arrange delivery to the place where the job actually ends: inside your apartment.
