A mover quotes $119 an hour. Another quotes $120.
Before choosing the first, ask how many hours you have to buy.
On two Thumbtack profiles we reviewed, the $120 rate had a two-hour minimum. The $119 rate had a three-hour minimum and a $79 fuel charge.
The published minimum calculations were $240 and $436, respectively. Neither figure, by itself, confirmed a complete price for a particular move.
That is the work involved in hiring movers through Thumbtack: turning a profile, an hourly rate and a conversation into an agreement you understand.
Thumbtack lets you browse local professionals, read reviews, discuss prices and choose whom to hire. Its hiring guidance recommends examining business information and past work, asking questions and setting expectations in writing.
Here is how to apply that advice to a moving job.
Give every mover the same job to price

Two quotes are difficult to compare when one business expects a couch beside the front door and another expects to carry it down three flights.
Prepare one description and use it with every provider:
- Pickup and delivery addresses.
- Complete item list, with dimensions for large pieces.
- Stairs, elevators and walking distance from the vehicle.
- Whether you need movers with a vehicle or labor only.
- Packing, wrapping or disassembly required.
- Date, arrival window and building restrictions.
- Whether you can help lift or need the crew to handle everything.
Photos can help explain the furniture and access. Include the narrow stair turn or long hallway, not just the item.
For an apartment move, “one bedroom” is a starting point. List the furniture and approximate box count so providers are pricing similar amounts of work.
Use this checklist before accepting a quote

An unanswered question is a gap in the quote. Resolve it before ranking that provider against another.
Calculate the minimum before comparing hourly rates
Here are two actual published schedules we checked on October 22, 2026.

Run Run Moving Company’s pricing FAQ states its hourly rate and two-hour minimum.
Tim Movers lists a slightly lower hourly rate, but its minimum and fuel charge change the calculation.
hese are published-rate calculations, not confirmed quotes for the same move or a Thumbtack price average. Truck inclusion and any remaining applicable charges need confirmation with each business.
A three-hour minimum may fit an apartment move perfectly well. It can be harder to justify for one dresser.
Ask what happens after the minimum, too. Does the company bill by the minute, in fifteen-minute increments or by another full hour? Then ask when the clock starts. Arrival at your address, departure from the company’s base and the first item lifted are different starting points.
Confirm that the vehicle is included
If you need furniture transported, a labor-only price leaves part of the job unsolved.
Ask the provider:
“Does this price include the vehicle, driver and enough movers to load and unload without my lifting help?”
Then confirm that the inventory fits.
A truck being included does not establish that everything fits in one trip. Send dimensions for a sectional, tall cabinet or oversized table, and ask whether another trip would change the charge.
If you already have a rental truck, say so. Request a labor-only quote and clarify whether you need loading, unloading or both.
Read reviews for the move you are hiring for
A five-star review for packing boxes tells you something about the business. A detailed review of a similar furniture move tells you more about whether it fits your job.
The screenshot below shows why the project details deserve attention. One review concerns packing and furniture handling. Another identifies a movers-only job within the same building, with elevator and stair access.

Project details on Run Run Moving Company’s profile distinguish packing work from a movers-only job within one building. These details help you find experience relevant to your move.
A successful move within one building does not tell you much about the company’s transportation arrangements.
Look for recent reviews that describe the work, communication, arrival and handling of problems. Read critical reviews and the provider’s replies for specific explanations and recurring issues.
Thumbtack identifies verified reviews with the “Hired on Thumbtack” badge. Its guidance also encourages reviewing business information, photos, references and how professionals respond to customers. Thumbtack’s review and profile guidance
If the profile does not show work like yours, ask for examples.
Ask what “insured” means for your move
“Licensed and insured” needs a follow-up conversation.
Ask what applies if furniture is damaged during handling or transportation, and what applies if the crew damages a wall, floor or doorway. Request the relevant documentation and an explanation of the claims process.
If your building requires a certificate of insurance, send its requirements before booking. Confirm that the moving business can provide the requested paperwork in time.
Thumbtack advises customers to verify a professional’s insurance and check relevant licensing. A profile badge should not replace those checks. Thumbtack’s insurance and credential guidance
Also ask who will perform the work. Thumbtack explains that an account holder’s background-check badge does not establish that every worker in a multi-person business has passed the same check.
Read the cancellation terms before paying a deposit
Moving dates change. Marketplace sellers cancel. Buildings reject elevator requests.
Get the provider’s terms while you still have time to choose another option.
Ask:
- When can you cancel without a charge?
- Is the deposit refundable?
- Does changing the date count as cancellation?
- What happens if the mover cancels or misses the agreed window?
- What happens if access is unavailable when the crew arrives?
Keep the answers with the written quote.
Do not assume the moving business has the cancellation policy you would expect from an on-demand booking app. Ask which terms apply to your reservation.
Send this message to each shortlisted mover
Use this as a starting point, then fill in the job details:
I need to move [items] from [pickup] to [delivery] on [date]. Pickup access is [details], and delivery access is [details].
I need [number] movers and [a vehicle/labor only]. I cannot help lift.
Please confirm the minimum total, minimum hours, when billing starts and stops, and charges after the minimum. Include truck, fuel, travel, materials and any access or heavy-item fees.
Please also confirm what protection applies to my belongings and the property, your deposit and cancellation terms, and the available arrival window.
Is this a fixed price or an estimate? What circumstances could change it?
Compare the answers before deciding. A provider that asks useful questions about your inventory may be giving you a more dependable estimate than one that immediately replies with a low hourly rate.
Prefer a fixed price before booking?
Comparing local businesses can be worthwhile when you want to choose the company and discuss the work directly.
If your priority is seeing a fixed price for the described move before booking, check Laborhutt as another option. Laborhutt offers upfront pricing without per-minute labor charges or a variable booking fee.
Enter the same inventory, addresses and access details you used for your other quotes. Review the offered schedule and included work before deciding.
Whether you hire through Thumbtack or choose another service, keep the written agreement. It should tell you who is coming, what they will bring, what work is included and how much you could owe.
